Simbang Gabi returns to Sacred Heart Cathedral

This week you’re invited to join the Filipino community within our Diocese for Simbang Gabi.

The tradition, which dates back to the 1600s, was started by the Spanish Friars in the Philippines and has been celebrated in Newcastle since 2017.

“The Simbang Gabi is a series of novena masses in honour of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Expectant Mother of God, and serve as a preparation for commemorating the Birth of Our Lord and Savior,” Father Anthony Coloma said.

“It is generally held before the break of dawn, but for pastoral reasons, anticipated evening Masses are celebrated here.

“The Simbang Gabi are nights of celebration, communion, and acts of solidarity.”

This year, the annual event will be hosted at Sacred Heart Cathedral for nine days from Thursday 15 December to Friday 23 December. Each evening mass will start at 7.30pm.

Father Anthony encourages everyone to come along – it’s a great opportunity to connect with others and satisfy your “spiritual needs”.

“Everyone is welcome to join us,” he said.
