Community invited to journey together and reflect on the Continental Stage for the Synod of Bishops

As the Church around the world has entered the Continental Stage for the Synod of Bishops on Synodality, Australians have been invited to create small groups and reflect on the Working Document for the Continental Stage.

It follows the recent release of the Reflection Guide for the Document for the Continental Stage (DCS) in preparation for next year’s 1st Session of the XVI General Ordinary Assembly of the Synod of Bishops on Synodality in Rome.

It fits into Stage 2 of the Synodal Process which involves dialogue among churches.

Director of Pastoral Ministries Teresa Brierley encourages everyone to take this opportunity to provide feedback and consider what comes next.

“The DCS Working Document substantially reflects our own synodal and Plenary Council listening, using the many voices from around the world,” she said.

“As I read it, I felt moved by the common themes of the many thousands of people who have engaged in listening and encountering, sharing their faith around the themes of communion, participation, and mission.

“I believe it is a genuine attempt to engage with the whole of the universal Church.

“I understand, it is a big ask for people to read the document and then form small reflection groups, however, I encourage you to please to do so as to contribute your voice to the future of our Church.”

The 2021 – 2024 Synod aims to provide an opportunity for the entire People of God to discern how to move forward on the path towards being a more synodal Church in the long-term.

The theme is Communion. Participation. Mission.

A simple question is guiding the process: How does this journeying together allow the Church to proclaim the Gospel in accordance with the mission entrusted to her; and what steps does the Spirit invite us to take in order to grow as a synodal Church?

The consultation phase for our Diocese is relatively short due to our Christmas break. The small group submissions are due by Friday 9 December.

For anyone unable to form their own small group, the Pastoral Ministries team will facilitate two online Zoom “Coffee Conversation” events. Details can be found here: https://DCS22.eventbrite.com.au
