GALLERY: Dedication of St Francis Xavier's Church Belmont
On the feast of Pentecost this weekend, a special event took place in Belmont. It was the Mass of Dedication of St Francis Xavier’s Church, and the Inauguration of the Blessed Sacrament Chapel of Jesus, the Good Shepherd. Around 500 people came to the dedication, including representatives from the Anglican and Uniting Churches.

Last week Fr Denis Edwards visited the diocese, under the auspices of Catholic Mission, Catholic Earthcare Australia and Catholic Religious Australia. He spoke to groups of clergy and teachers and his Saturday colloquium was open to the wider community.

The Sisters of St Joseph, through the Tenison Woods Education Centre, have been running Mums’ Night Out for many years. The night was originally envisioned to be a night off for busy mums who would gather at Lochinvar and have a meal prepared for them to enjoy while talking about the challenges and joys of motherhood.

The Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle invites all to celebrate World Communications Day on Sunday 8 May. The 2016 theme, chosen by Pope Francis, is ‘Communication and Mercy’ and Francis invites all to reflect on what mercy means to them.

Walking for Mercy
On 6 June, parish priest at Nelson Bay, Fr Kevin Corrigan, will commence a walk from St Mary MacKillop Chapel, North Sydney, to Sacred Heart Cathedral, Hamilton. Its aim is to provide financial and prayer support for a newly commencing project. Fr Kevin explains.
Creator of model training centre recognised
Englishman Clifford Beazley AM, went away to sea at the age of 17, joining the merchant navy and making his way through the ranks, eventually becoming captain. The young seafaring Cliff could not have imagined being awarded an AM by His Excellency General, The Honourable David Hurley AC DSC (Ret'd), Governor of NSW, in recognition of establishing a unique ship handling training centre.
Beauty personified in the eyes of their children
My friend’s mother died late last year and at her funeral, her two sons and one of her grandchildren delivered a wonderful eulogy. The stories they told reflected the depth of their love for a very special lady, but there was one moment that touched me deeply. Her son was recalling a memory of her from almost 60 years before, when he was only a young child. As he described his mum’s dark hair and the way she walked into the room, his voice caught and he had to stop, such was the power of that memory and his love for her.
