St Pius X Primary School, Windale claim the silver medal in the elusive Nigel Bagley Relay

Four runners from St Pius X Primary School, Windale proudly claimed the silver medal in the Nigel Bagley Relay at the NSW PSSA Athletics Championships held at Sydney Olympic Park in Homebush.

Students Atlas Hatchman, Damian Davey, Barry Knox and Layla Knox competed against 27 schools in an exciting relay final, taking out the silver medal, a mere one second behind first place.

“In the first two races I didn’t know we were going to do as well as we did, but by working together as a team we came second,” silver medal winner, Damian Davey said.

“It felt like we were doing our school proud and it was really exciting.”

Teammate Layla Knox agreed and said that the team became more confident as the day progressed.

“We were really nervous at first, but after the second race we were positive that we would win,” she said.

The team won their first heat of the day by almost 10 metres to progress to the semi-final, which they won by a similar margin to progress to the final.

Religious Education Coordinator at St Pius X Windale, Chris Tanchevski, accompanied the team on the day and said that it was an incredible achievement that required a lot of hard work and commitment.

“It was their first year running together as a team. They practised and worked really hard, progressing through regional, diocesan and then Polding athletics carnivals to make it to the Championships,” Mr Tanchevski said.

“The whole school even watched the race and cheered them on back at home in the library. We’re all really proud of them.”

The day was made extra special with a medal presentation on the 2000 Sydney Olympics podium.

The New South Wales Primary School Sports Association (NSW PSSA) Nigel Bagley Relay is a unique race designed for students from schools with 55 enrolments or less.
