Maitland Newcastle student breaks record at Polding Athletics in Homebush

The 2023 Polding Athletics Championships took place in Sydney Olympic Park with over 100 Maitland Newcastle students representing our Diocese. Families travelled from as far as Lismore, Armidale, Bathurst, Wilcannia Forbes and Broken Bay.

Olive Wade from St Joseph’s, Charlestown was a standout on the day breaking a Polding record that has stood for over 10 years. Olive jumped 1.52m in the 12-13 years age category. Quin Neyland was another star at the Championships winning gold in three events. The Diocese topped the multiclass events with Sienna Compton winning gold in five events, Caleb Hyslop gold in four events and Sebastian Stace medalling in four events.

Overall, the Maitland-Newcastle Diocese performed very well with an exceptional 36 students qualifying for the Polding squad to compete at the NSWPSSA Athletics Championships in Homebush on October 25 and 26. A huge number also made it to the finals in most events.

Patrick Kelly, Raymond Terrace (3rd 8-10yrs multiclass 100m)

 

The St Patrick’s, Swansea junior girls relay team performed outstandingly winning both the prelim and final in the relay. They will be very competitive at NSWPSSA. The Singleton senior boys relay team was also very strong placing 3rd overall. Maitland-Newcastle dominated in the small school relay with St Joeph’s, Merriwa winning silver and St Pius, Windale winning bronze.

Many didn’t medal but they represented our Diocese with pride and honour.
