St Mary’s Primary School celebrates the feast of Our Lady Help of Christians

On Wednesday the 24th of May, St Mary’s Primary School, Warners Bay held a liturgy to celebrate the feast of Our Lady Help of Christians.

Our Lady Help of Christians is the patron saint of Australia, along with St Mary of the Cross MacKillop. The feast focuses on Mary's help to those in need through her intercession.

When Mary Help of Christians was adopted as the patron saint of Australia in 1844 there were only a small number of priests, so Catholic families turned to Mary for support, reciting the Rosary to keep their faith alive. Catholic Australia continues to remain faithful to Mary and was the first nation to choose her under the title of Help of Christians.

Students came to school dressed in blue and began the day by celebrating a liturgy. During the liturgy students reflected on each prayer of the Rosary, including a dramatic representation of each of the mysteries. The school choir supported the school singing ‘Mary our Mother’, by John Burland and ‘These Hands’, by Andrew Chinn. Madeline Bojkowski, Georgina Bacietes and Adia Thompson were memorable in their beautiful rendition of ‘Mary Did You Know?’

Following the liturgy, students celebrated Mary through prayer and reflection and discussed the ways they can experience Mary’s love in our world today. Students also engaged in a variety of art and craft activities, where they created symbolic representations of Mary’s love for us that they can take home as a reminder of this special day.
