Held on World Theatre Day, the competition is open to elective drama students from Years 9 – 11 for a day of improvisation games and exercises, where teams are scored on how well they can entertain, create and sustain a plot, and utilise their technical skills. The competition has been running in the Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle for over 20 years.
St Clare’s High School Student, Trinity traveled over two hours from Taree to attend the day and said it was well worth the trip as it helps her improve her group work and improvisation skills for the HSC.
“It lets me find my strengths and weaknesses and how I can improve, and how I can work better with others in my group,” Trinity said.
“It’s also good to be able to come and have fun – to have a break from Year 11 work and assignments to do something that is more about self-expression and enjoyment.”
Piper from St Paul’s Catholic College, Booragul said that the day is a great opportunity to meet like-minded students from other schools in the diocese.
“Being able to meet other drama kids in the area is so good,” Piper said.
“I feel really grateful to be able to do this. Performing is the best feeling in the world! You feel so confident and proud of yourself and your friends.”
Claudette Stace is an Education Officer at the Catholic Schools Office. She says while the TheatreSports competition is a great day for a bit of fun, it also allows students to build on the skills they need in life beyond school.
“Opportunities like our Diocesan Theatresports day provide students with the ‘Six C’s’ of Contemporary Education: creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, communication, character and citizenship. These are a set of core competencies students need to survive and thrive in an ever-changing global world,” Mrs. Stace said.
“Judging from the agility our students demonstrated in their improvisation skills, their futures look bright.”
Congratulations to the Year 10 and 11 drama students from St Clare’s High School, Taree who performed incredibly on the day, as they used their physicality and strong character abilities to win first place for their performances.
