The 'Joy' of sailing

Last week students from St Dominic’s Mayfield officially launched the yacht Joy as part of the Making Waves Foundation, a sailing organisation bringing people together to experience sailing - regardless of their ability or disability.

The launch of Joy was undertaken with much fanfare on Newcastle Harbour, launched in style with Apple Cider being cracked over the hull.  Through the Making Waves program, students embark on sailing adventures around Newcastle Harbour, learning valuable skills like teamwork, communication, and respect for each other and the elements.

The partnership between St Dominic’s and the Making Waves Foundation is invaluable in the school’s efforts to support students with their social-emotional growth and development. Through the sailing experience, students gain skills such as self-advocacy, confidence, and independence. St Dom’s is looking forward to continuing their collaboration with Making Waves and helping students achieve their full potential.

The Newcastle Weekly also joined the fanfare on the day. Click here to read their story.
