I find myself in Canberra for the weekend, with my son and his family, to attend Grandparent’s Day at Marist College, Canberra, which is on Monday 25 March, the feast of the Annunciation.

I have finally made it to my desk on this Sunday evening, partly due to my lack of motivation to do so, and also because of our viewing of the program on the ABC about ten years on from the Black Saturday bush fires in Victoria in 2009.

On this very hot summer’s day which is known as Australia Day, I remain inside at my desk and begin the year with this first message to you. I do not wish to enter into the dialogue/debate around Australia Day but will share with you the reading from Isaiah (32:15-18), for this day. Each year when this is read I am touched by its beauty, relevance and meaning for us as a people of God in this place.
