Sensory Exploration at St Nicholas, Singleton

Children in the Toons room at St Nicholas, Singleton, have been enjoying sensory exploration activities.

We have made sand slime, our own playdough and have appreciated different shaving foam activities. The sand slime was created by adding sand and shaving foam together. The children have been enjoying making their own playdough by adding the different ingredients into a bowl and using their measurement skills to measure out how much of each ingredient they need. Shaving foam has been a favourite in the Toons Room as the children have been hiding objects in the shaving foam and then going on a treasure hunt.

Sensory experiences enable children to use their senses to explore and manipulate objects. Exploring touch, smell, sound, sight and taste contribute to the children’s overall learning. When exploring through sensory play children will also begin to classify objects based on different textures, which is an important part of learning. Sensory play facilitates exploration and naturally encourages children to use scientific processes while they play, create, investigate and explore. Spending time stimulating their senses helps children develop cognitively, linguistically, socially and emotionally, physically and creatively.
