Timor Leste does not have a profession-saturated culture like ours. Only a lucky minority is able to attend uninterrupted formal education and to pursue a chosen career path. Mim was instrumental in supporting community projects for reliable water supply and sustainable agriculture in remote villages. Her persistence in putting forward solutions gave her eventual acceptance as having the skills and experience for the job at hand. But more importantly, her presence changed the thinking of what women can do beyond domestic duties.
Mim urges those from Newcastle to feel the same liberation she did as a Palms volunteer and help to meet the many requests from overseas communities in 2018. If you are experienced in a profession, business or trade, the Palms Information Session on Wednesday 23 August, from 5.30-7pm at The Commons (152 Beaumont Street, Hamilton) will reveal many options. Mim will be there to share her story and you’ll also learn more about how you will be supported in this exciting, life-changing opportunity.
Since 1961 Palms Australia has recruited qualified and experienced Australians who volunteer to assist the growth of vital grass roots organisations overseas by fostering the strengths of their people.
