Twenty-five participants gathered over two days at the New Lambton Basketball courts to participate in the program.
Participants were instructed in riding skills, road safety, bike maintenance and the legal requirements of attire and licencing. This program provides a valuable resource for participants as it gives them a mode of transport and independence.
This program is a wonderful collaboration – co-ordination of participants by the Refugee Hub, funding by Newcastle City Council as part of its Newcastle Cycling Strategy and Action Plan, provision of training by Bike and Fitness Newcastle, and the provision and recommissioning of bicycles by Waratah Police and Dan the Bike Man from the University of Newcastle.
The Refugee Hub plans to facilitate future bike workshops for refugee youth in the school holidays.
