BOSTES honours diocesan teacher

Andrew Cornwall has become one of the first teachers in NSW and the first in the Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle to be recognised by the Board of Studies, Teaching and Educational Standards (BOSTES) for the demonstration of excellence amid rigorous national standards.

Andrew, who currently works as an Education Officer (Learning Technologies) at the Catholic Schools Office, Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle, was one of 151 teachers from across NSW public, Catholic and independent schools to receive a medal recognising achievement of the highest levels of accreditation in a ceremony in Sydney on 11 July.

A voluntary initiative, National certification supports teachers to explore and reflect on their practice at the Highly Accomplished and Lead career stage of the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers.

“This was an excellent opportunity to reflect on my practice and purpose in education,” said Mr Cornwall.

“I discovered things about my own teaching that I wasn’t aware of and found gaps that I needed to develop further.”

BOSTES Highly Accomplished or Lead Teacher Accreditation involves a comprehensive application process, which requires teachers to submit multiple sources of evidence to support:

  • an exceptional knowledge of their subject;
  • modelling of highly effective, evidence based teaching strategies;
  • informal or formal leadership roles and outcomes within and beyond their school; and
  • successfully initiating opportunities for parents to engage in their children’s learning.

Andrew looks forward to sharing his learnings with colleagues across the Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle.
