The sessions were organised and conceived by dedicated music teachers, Alicia Paterson and Louiza Mavros, from St Joseph’s and supported by the ASPIRE program.
Over two days, choirs from St Pius X High School, Adamstown, St Paul’s High School, Booragul, ASC, St Peter’s Campus Maitland, St Mary’s Catholic College, Gateshead, St Clare’s High School, Taree and St Francis Xavier’s College Hamilton, as well as the host school, participated in singing workshops, received feedback from guest presenter, Danielle O’Keefe, and had the opportunity to meet likeminded vocalists from across the diocese.
In preparation for the Choral Showcase, taking place Thursday 19 October, groups were able to present one of their prepared pieces and receive guidance from Sydney-based conductor and choral expert, Danielle O’Keefe, who provided insight into performing as a group, blending voices and even choral rapping!
The students were challenged as part of Danielle’s workshop to ‘be brave’ and be prepared to fail as they ‘sight sang’ a challenging choral work.
In breakout workshops the passion and talent of music teachers, Asha Lunarzewski, Luke Baker, Alicia Paterson and Louiza Mavros, was clear as they led sessions in harmony singing, caring for your voice, a capella and performance.
Students and teachers alike had new and wonderful experiences in the supportive environment created at St Joseph’s and it was a pleasure to see students joining together in song and embracing the joy of singing.
