‘Aspiration’ is the latest buzzword, the magic touchstone which will apparently give us entry into a golden age in which individual striving for wealth will solve all the problems of wide-spread inequality and disadvantage presently existing in a country once known as the land of ‘the fair go’ for all.
“We are better than this.” The words are those of Stan Grant in a passionate address which tore away the curtain from what he called, “the Australian Dream” and revealed the ugliness of this country’s inherent racism and its shameful history of murder, repression and dispossession of the First People of this land.
We are often urged by politicians to ‘Be alert, not alarmed’, in their efforts to alert us to some threat to our safety and wellbeing and that of our country, usually emanating from some foreign source. The Catholic parishioners at St Joseph’s, Gloucester, could well pass the alertness test but probably fail miserably on not being alarmed.
