An event to be held in Newcastle on 17-20 May is effectively part of a response to the call of Pope Francis in his encyclical letter Laudato Si’ (2015) for ‘care for our common home’. Pope Francis wrote, “Young people demand change. They wonder how anyone can claim to be building a better future without thinking of the environmental crisis and the sufferings of the excluded.” (#13)

After five years, Pope Francis continues to surprise. Amongst other notable aspects of his latest Apostolic Exhortation, Gaudete Et Exsultate: On the Call to Holiness in Today’s World, women – saints, writers, witnesses, theologians, known and unknown ‒ are referenced frequently. It could be said that different readers look for different features – but when one belongs to a group that has frequently been marginalised, that’s entirely understandable.
