Bishop Bill Wright
Most Reverend William (Bill) Wright is the eighth Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle and is the pastoral leader of more than 150,000 Catholics in the region.
Relatively early in my time here, I met with the editor of the Newcastle Herald and journalist Joanne McCarthy. They were at pains to let me know that, despite what I might have heard, they are not anti-church but pro- the victims of child sexual abuse.
This year marks the 150th anniversary of the death of the Archpriest John Joseph Therry, virtually the first Catholic chaplain to the Colony of New South Wales.
Last month I was enthusing about the potential benefits of successful urban renewal, so it is only fair that I also publish my recent experiences of rural delights.
As part of my annual leave, I had dinner with old friends in Sydney on Saturday and Sunday nights, leaving me free through the day on Sunday to be a tourist in the city. Yes, yes, I had lived there most of my life, but out in the suburbs, sometimes a very long way out indeed.
