The Journey to the Grand Final

Earlier in the year, twenty-three budding chess enthusiasts from St Joseph’s Primary, Kilaben Bay took part in the local heat of the Interschool Chess Challenge at Bishop Tyrrell Anglican College.

The students were from a range of year groups, from Year 1 to Year 6. Due to COVID-19, no parents were allowed in attendance and a congratulatory handshake was replaced with a nod. Despite this, the students had a great time and were beyond excited when they found out they had made it into the Semi-final. In progressing to the semi-final it meant only five of the highest scoring individuals could advance, which from our participants included Andrew H, Evanna S, Lucas A, Lucas B and Martin S.

It was evident that the whole team were happy as this was the first time the school had made it further than a heat. In preparation for the semi-final the chess team held a raffle to raise money for an online chess lesson and took part in a group Zoom to discuss strategies. The students completed the semi-final tournament online and were amazed to learn that they made it through to the grand-final. St Joseph’s was one of only twelve Primary Schools out of 45 to make it through and the only School from our Diocese! The team tried very hard to practise their chess during lockdown by playing with family members or online.

The grand final was recently held on September 17. Although St Joseph’s didn’t receive a place, they all agreed the journey to the grand final was great fun and a tremendous achievement.
