After six decades of internal conflict and political struggles, the education of children in the nation of Myanmar, located in South-East Asia, has suffered.

As the nation moves into a more peaceful era, the Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle - with the support of Catholic Mission - has committed to raising awareness and providing financial support to help heal the nation through improving education.

With the help of parishes, schools, the CSO Teachers Helping Teachers Program and other regular donors, Catholic Mission has been able provide funds for the construction and renovation of St John’s School in the Hakha Diocese and training for local teachers.

Through these efforts, it is hoped that children, even in the most remote part of the nation, will have better access to quality education.

To say thank you for the donations received so far, Catholic Mission hosted a High Tea event, with special guest speaker Fr Lucas Tha Ling Sum, Chancellor of the Hakha Diocese in Myanmar.

Those thanked at the event included:

• parishes and parish secretaries who have raised $46,000 since May 2018
• schools across the diocese who have and plan to run fundraising activities for St John’s School and teacher training in Myanmar, in particular San Clemente High School, Mayfield and St Joseph’s Primary School, Kilaben Bay were recognised during the event for their consistent strong support for Mission awareness and fundraising over recent years
• the Teachers Helping Teachers program which has provided ongoing financial support for teacher training and education in Myanmar
• the Catholic Development Fund of Maitland-Newcastle Diocese for sponsoring the afternoon
