Teaching students with Down Syndrome

Recently, the Down Syndrome Association of New South Wales (DSNSW) presented a two-day education conference in Sydney to inform teachers about practical strategies, knowledge and skills when working with students with Down Syndrome, developmental delay, intellectual disability and other chromosomal disorders.

Several keynote speakers including Dr Kelly Burgoyne (formerly of Downs Ed International) and Dr Rhonda Faragher shared evidence-based research and practical classroom applications to improve student outcomes in the areas of numeracy and literacy.

Aiming to “equip attendees with a toolkit of practical strategies, information and resources to best support students in various educational contexts,” the session highlighted the importance of the wellbeing for students within a school environment and offered the following elements in supporting the student’s needs. These elements are all interconnected and should be viewed as interdependent aspects of wellbeing:

Key Points to Consider - Programming

Ask yourself the following questions when looking at adjusting the program:

  1. What is the goal for the lesson?
  2. How can we adjust the worksheet or activity to suit?
  3. Would technology help?
  4. Does the student need material presented differently?
  5. Should student present their work differently?
  6. Will student be assessed the same way?
  7. Will student need different assessments?

When delivering the content consider the following:

  1. Determine key concept the student must learn.
  2. Break tasks in to smaller components – Task Analysis
  3. Provide opportunities to practice new skills and concept
  4. Alter the amount to time given to for task completion
  5. Change level of difficulty of task
  6. Allow student to record lesson – video, audio
  7. Provide a visual of key concepts for the student to follow or utilise as a cue
  8. Adjust workload- reduce assignments or an alternate assignment.
  9. Use scaffolds to support task completion
  10. Visuals with oral presentation
  11. Visual checklists
  12. Alert student when important information is being introduced by stating their name
  13. Consider the use of Assistive Technology
  14. Calendar or visual planning.

Question: How do we teach our students with DS?

Answer: Teach like media ads/ commercials, use their tricks:

  1. Capture attention - a “little bit, often” rule
  2. Prime time - time of learning.
  3. Slogans for big ideas (friends of ten, rainbow facts)
  4. Use the visual
  5. The element of surprise (anticipate, make them wonder what's coming)
  6. Break the learning into smaller steps
  7. Ads teach, don't test. Present materials and not test them.
