Crafty ladies meet in Women’s Shed

Men’s Sheds have become familiar facilities and their members have contributed significantly to the life of their communities and to their own wellbeing. Rose Smith of Karuah recounts the origin of her local Women’s Shed.

Having always had a great love for craft of one kind or another, and having had the wonderful experience of belonging to a group of friendly, crafty ladies, I decided to try something in our Myall Coast parish community that might provide an opportunity for women to get together socially, have a cuppa and take part in some type of craft activity.

With the encouragement of parishioners, Women’s Shed was born! On the second Tuesday of each month some thirteen women gather in Marian House to solve the problems of the world, enjoy morning tea and engage in some craft activity.

Transport is provided for those who need it and the group is open to all, not restricted to members of our parish.

Some of the group are knitters, some crochet and some have not been exposed to much craft at all, but all seem to enjoy whatever we do.

We have tried china painting, cottage crafts, appliqué, card-making, beading and Christmas decorations, just to name a few activities. We share ideas and patterns and enjoy learning new skills.

Members of this group are among many who knit soft toys, sew library bags and support, in a variety of ways, our annual involvement in the Samaritans’ Christmas Box Appeal.

To produce something with your own hands is a source of great satisfaction and the need for companionship and the opportunity to relax and have a good laugh are vital to us all. Women’s Shed provides all this and more!
